Barkley Still Unsigned as Giants Break For the Summer

Penn State RB Saquon Barkley, selected No. 2 overall by the New York Giants in this year’s NFL Draft, is one of eight Top 10 picks still unsigned as teams break for the summer. Of the 32 players selected in the first round this year, only 16 have been brought under contract.

The players in the Top 10 who have signed deals are Notre Dame OL Quenton Nelson, taken sixth overall by the Indianapolis Colts and UCLA QB Josh Rosen, selected with the 10th pick by the Arizona Cardinals.

Others besides Barkley taken in the Top 10 still unsigned include:

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield (No. 1 overall)
New York Jets QB Sam Darnold (No. 3 overall)
Browns CB Denzel Ward (No. 4 overall),
Denver Broncos DE Bradley Chubb (No. 5 overall)
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen (No. 7 overall)
Chicago Bears LB Roquan Smith (No. 8 overall)
San Francisco 49ers OT Mike McGlinchey (No. 9 overall).

Nelson and Rosen’s deals are for the standard four years and both are fully guaranteed. Nelson will receive $23.888 million over the life of the contract, and average of $5.972M per season while Rosen’s deal is for $17.597 million, which averages out to $4.399 million per year.

Business Insider projects that Barkley will receive a deal worth approximately $31,647,174 with a $21,086,526 signing bonus. That averages out to a shade over $7.9 million per season.

The Giants were allotted $9.781 million to pay rookies. Four of the other five players the team selected have all been signed (fifth rounder R.J. McIntosh is pending), reducing that pool down to approximately $7 million or so (the terms of fourth-rounder B.J. Hill’s deal are still undisclosed).

It shouldn’t be viewed as a big deal that Barkley isn’t signed and it will be interesting to see how long this lasts.
