Giants Bolster Depth, Talent Pool by Selecting Sam Beal in Supplemental Draft

The New York Giants uncharacteristically delved into the NFL’s Supplemental Draft on Wednesday, using a 2019 third-round draft choice on Western Michigan CB Sam Beal.

It’s a bold move, one that the team’s previous general manager, Jerry Reese, would likely have not made. But things are different now under new general manager Dave Gettleman.

The Giants did not solve their need for depth and youth at corner this past offseason through either the draft or free agency, so with a talent such as Beal staring at them, they decided to address the situation.

“We’re very, very excited about getting Sam in the draft,” Gettleman said. “We feel like we’re getting our third-round pick now, We discussed it at length yesterday, and had a great conversation. We basically had a draft meeting in the office, with people on the speaker phone who had seen him. It was a very thorough conversation.”

So, how can Beal help the Giants?

Well, first off, he’s got size (6-1, 190) with lots of athleticism (4.47 40 and 37-inch vertical) and the Giants are thin at corner after Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple.

“He’s long, he’s very athletic for a corner, he has all the physical skills, he can carry the vertical, he has very good play speed, he shows instincts out there, he has ball awareness, he doesn’t panic when the ball is thrown at his guy, and he is a very willing tackler. We just feel it gives us a really talented young kid with the ability to ascend,” added Gettleman.

Not quite 22 years old, Beal can provide instant depth at corner for the next few seasons and even compete for a starting role at some point even though it might be difficult getting off the ground not having an offseason. His strong cover skills made him attractive to many teams this offseason, but there was some reluctance to use a high pick on him.

The reason why Beal was in this special draft was because he was on the verge of being academically ineligible for the upcoming college season after falling behind in some classes. He comes with basically a clean slate otherwise, meaning no red flags or off-field issues.

Beal should challenge the crowded field of free agents in camp to step up their game this summer. He’s basically guaranteed a roster spot after the team spent a third-rounder on him, a pick they now won’t have in 2019.

This move was an adroit one by the Giants. It is the perfect use of the Supplemental Draft. The one position where depth and talent were needed was cornerback, and they got that on Wednesday in Beal.
