Saquon Signs Rookie Deal; Giants open up camp early for rookies, QBs and selected veterans

The New York Giants opened the doors to their 2018 Training Camp three days early on Sunday to rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans. To get things off on the right foot, Big Blue inked their two remaining unsigned draft choices – RB Saquon Barkley and DL R.J. McIntosh.

Head coach Pat Shurmur, in his parting presser after minicamp, explained why he was bringing part of the team in early.

“Done this in the past. It is a great way for the rookies to get a lot more reps,” Shurmur said. “It is a good way for the quarterbacks to get going. Those can be a very productive two days. Then, we will have the vets and the whole team together on the 25th. It has been written we are going to practice with Detroit for a couple of days prior to playing them in a preseason game. I have done that in the past. It can be very productive, especially for the younger players to get a lot of reps. In terms of the training camp schedule, for the most part we will have walkthroughs in the morning and practice in the afternoon. There will be a handful of practices where we practice in the morning. We will just change it up a little bit. It was a very productive offseason. I told the players we have come a long way, but we have a long way to go in all areas.”

Barkley, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, was signed to a four-year, $31.2 million contract on Sunday. The deal includes a $20.76 million signing bonus. As with every contract for a first-round pick, Barkley’s deal comes with a team option for a fifth season, which can be exercised after his third year.

Barkley was highest RB selected in the draft since the New Orleans Saints took USC’s Reggie Bush No. 2 overall in 2006. The Giants bypassed several top quarterback prospects, such as Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen, in favor of Barkley. They did select a QB in the fourth round, Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta.

McIntosh, who did not participate in the Giants’offseason program, will start camp on the active/non-football illness list.

Also at camp early are all four QBs: Eli Manning, Davis Webb, rookie Kyle Lauletta and free agent veteran Alex Tanney.

The Giants’ other draft picks – OL Will Hernandez, DL B.J. Hill, LB Lorenzo Carter and Lauletta will be present as will CB Sam Beal, who the Giants selected in the NFL’s Supplemental Draft last week.

Other rookies in attendance will be top UDFA signees CB Grant Haley, WR Jawill Davis and OL Nick Gates. No word on which veterans were asked to report early.
