The Giant Insider: Monday Report

The Giants Insider is the only magazine devoted to coverage of the New York Giants. For over a decade Giants fans have relied on The Giants Insider’s expert, in-depth analysis and opinion on their favorite team. Issues are only primarily published during football season with only 4 of the 22 issues printed from January to August. (Subscribe NOW)

Beat reporter Chris Bisignano and editor Jerry Foley do a terrific job of covering the team year round (with help from writers such as yours truly) and Chris appears regularly on out podcast.

Chris was at the Giants’ facility today and filed this report via his Twitter account @GiantInsder.

“Just spoke to (Saquon) Barkley at his locker. Barkley talked about how he’s studied Jaguar D , so impressed with speed of Telvin Smith and Myles Jack. Joked about how Calais Campbell called him after he was drafted and told him how he can’t wait to hit him .”

“Some more notes: -EE (TE Evan Engram) told me he feels good and good chance to play Sunday – New center Spencer Pulley is happy to be here, a little surprised about being released in L.A but , “ it’s the business””

“(Rookie safety) Sean Chandler told me how he was nervous for two days waiting on cuts. “Since I was a kid, I wanted to play in NFL” Quite a story for this young man considering what he had to overcome in his childhood.”

Found a few things strange in what coach Shurmur talked about today. He said how he liked a veteran presence in the QB room (as back-up QB). But, Tanney has played only one game. Yes, he’s bounced around a lot, but to say he’s a veteran is a little strange. Josh McCown, that’s a veteran presence, not Alex Tanney.

Second, coach went on to say that a veteran can go with very few reps and he thinks that’s an attribute that he looks for. Once again, for somebody like a McCown that’s good. Why? because he’s played a ton of snaps. Tanney has barely played any snaps, period!

Finally, I find it real strange that coach kept two guys who were third-stringers all of camp in Evan Brown and Sean Chandler. Brown was the third center on roster and now is fourth with the addition of Spencer Pulley. Why four centers? I mean, I do expect Greco to play strictly guard now, but kind of weird. Hope everybody had a good Labor Day, enjoy the last day of summer. Football is six days away!!!”
