Giants further tweak their roster as season opener nears

The New York Giants now have just 22 players leftover from their 2017 roster. On Tuesday they signed John Jenkins, a veteran defensive tackle who was recently released by the Chicago Bears.

Jenkins, 6-3, 327-pounder, entered the NFL out of Georgia as a third-round draft choice (82nd overall selection) by New Orleans in 2013. He has played in 59 games with 23 starts for the Saints (2013-16), Seattle Seahawks (2016) and Bears (2017), recording 121 tackles (67 solo), six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

To make room on the roster, the Giants waived third-year linebacker Romeo Okwara, who despite having a terrific camp and preseason, did not appear to fit into GM Dave Gettleman’s plans.

The Giants filed our their practice squad by signing back defensive lineman Josh Backs, who was one of their final cuts on Saturday.
